Journey to Biotech: BCLA and BUGS Seminar

On July 18th Biotech Connections Los Angeles and the Bridge Institute at the University of Southern California hosted a "Journey Into Biotech" panel to provide undergraduate students interested in STEM careers a firsthand look at the diverse opportunities within biotechnology and how they can leverage their education to land a job after graduation.

Moderated by BCLA’s Rudra Persaud, our panelists Bhargava Nemmaru (Senior Scientist in Process Development at Amgen); Ryan George (Genetic Engineer at Spira); and Jenny Dujveerakul (Technical Applications Specialist at Thermo Fisher), brought their invaluable experiences to the forefront.

Our panelists emphasized the significant differences between working in large biotech companies and start-ups throughout the discussion. Each environment offers unique challenges and opportunities, and the speakers shared their insights into the dynamic nature of both settings.

One crucial takeaway from the event was exploring various career options before fully committing to a specific path. Our panelists stressed the value of gaining exposure to diverse roles within biotech, allowing students to make informed decisions that align with their passions and strengths.

Another critical aspect highlighted during the event was the understanding that career development extends beyond academic achievements. Our speakers emphasized the significance of networking and connecting with mentors. These relationships can be instrumental in shaping one's professional journey and fostering personal growth.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed panelists, moderator, and all attendees for making this event a resounding success. As we continue to advocate for biotech growth in Los Angeles, we look forward to organizing more events that empower and inspire the next generation of biotech trailblazers.
