Last Friday, September 19th, 2015, the BCLA team had the pleasure to visit LA Biomed– a non-profit medical research institute. Located in Torrance at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, LA Biomed, facilitates the development of groundbreaking treatments from thyroid deficiency to lowering cholesterol and functions to connect laboratories, clinics, and the community.
At the beginning of their Science Fridays Seminar, Agatha Lee, a Technology Transfer Manager at LA Biomed briefly informed the attendants about an internship position in the Technology Transfer Office (TTO). The position would be offered to graduate students or postdocs for approximately 10 hours per week at LA Biomed, and would provide the candidate with valuable experience in a team that has produced over 75 patent families. The position is available for graduate students and postdocs who are interested in gaining experience in this field. During the remaining time, Stefanie Volland, our chapter president, discussed BCLA’s mission and how we are facilitating the connection between academia and industry. The talk was well received and followed by a lively networking session. LA Biomed has a lot to offer to the LA biotech industry, and we are excited by the opportunity to connect with them at this past and future Science Fridays Seminars.
